THE IMPACT OF SARCOPENIA AND SARCOPENIC OBESITY ON MORTALITY IN OLDER ADULTS

Early detection and proper nutrition are crucial for enhancing longevity and quality of life

The recent study titled “Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity and Mortality Among Older People” investigates the prevalence of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity and their association with mortality in older adults. Sarcopenic obesity is characterized by low handgrip strength combined with altered body composition, such as high fat percentage and low muscle mass.

The study concludes that both sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are significantly associated with increased mortality. Early detection through muscle strength assessment is crucial for identifying at-risk individuals. Emphasizing proper nutrition, particularly adequate protein intake, as non-pharmacological interventions can help mitigate these risks and delay the onset of and to treat sarcopenia, especially sarcopenic obesity. This highlights the critical role of a balanced diet in improving longevity and quality of life for older adults.
