THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF MEDICAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

Did you know that providing the right nutritional support to hospitalized patients not only boosts recovery but also significantly reduces healthcare costs?

A recent ESPEN Fact Sheet publication reveals that early and intensive medical nutrition therapy in malnourished patients doesn’t just lower complications and mortality, it also leads to meaningful cost savings.

By delivering targeted nutritional care:

  • Infection rates drop
  • Hospital stays are shorter
  • ICU time is reduced, cutting intensive care costs

In fact, these improvements translate to an average of $3,809.70 saved per patient during hospitalization.

These benefits are also seen after discharge. When malnourished older adults continue with oral nutritional supplements at home, the risk of hospital readmission drops by 11%. That’s an additional $2,546 saved per readmission avoided, adding up to a total of $5,110 per patient in post-discharge savings.
